Video blogging, aka Vlogging, have many things that are better than traditional text-based blogs. It’s not surprising that more and more people are moving to this form of blogging. These new types of blogs are much better for getting and holding the attention of your browsers. People are even more likely to become drawn to the video content of a vlog over that of an ordinary written posting on a the typical blog.
Obviously, the more viewers you can get enthusiastic about your site, the greater the chance you’ll have word of mouth spread, which will ultimately lead to more traffic and thus more money in your pocket if you are monetizing your site.
There can be some disadvantages to video blogging as well however, and these are easily overcome. Hosting a vlog can require quite a bit of server space, which can make it difficult to get started. That’s if you choose to host it yourself. The best way is to use a service like YouTube, Google Video or Viddler for free. Then take the embed code and put it up on your site. Let them handle the bandwidth issues and costs.
If you don’t want to use those services and want more control, use a service like Amazon’s storage service called S3. They charge per GB used when you upload and then for bandwidth. The cost is about .10/GB to upload and then .17/GB for bandwidth usage. This is such a small cost for complete control.
The time it takes to process and upload a video file is another difference to just writing a text article on a traditional blog. Operating a video blog also will mean a little more effort, especially if you’re not used to working with the shooting and editing process of videos.
The truth is that once you get used to it, then it really is pretty simple. The hardest part for many is simply going through with the shooting process.
In addition, sometimes due to some computers and connections, some people may get frustrated with loading or playback issues from time to time.
Even though most have good internet connections and the equipment in order to watch videos on their computers, you still need to think about who will be coming to your blog. For example, many baby boomers who may not be that familiar about the online world yet, a video blog may not be the best choice for your blog. You need to always take your market into consideration before deciding what to do.
Whether you choose a video blog or traditional or a combination of both, like myself, just continue to offer your people quality content that will be helpful to them. Be yourself and have fun!
